From the BARNA Group - Forgiveness and Mercy
Data revealed the Church is struggling to understand and embody mercy today. Consider these findings:

  • One-quarter of practicing Christians says there is a person who they cannot forgive.
  • Almost half of practicing Christians say mercy doesn’t influence their thoughts or actions or they haven’t thought about whether it does.
  • One in five practicing Christians reports struggling to receive forgiveness for something they have personally done.
  • Christians grapple with whether certain people deserve compassion or forgiveness, and they are not all that different from non-Christians when it comes to embodying merciful attitudes and actions.

Our hearts were broken and moved to turn this research into something more than a data report. So we created The Mercy Journey collection, a brand new resource suite and the first of its kind from Barna.

One of our core values at Barna is to engage the head, heart and hands. As a team of geeks, the head part comes most naturally. But data alone doesn’t transform people. Sure, it informs—but our vision is to do more than make people smarter.
The Mercy Journey helps equip Christians to form a deeper understanding of mercy that is both rooted in the data and is transformative.

This collection is designed to work from the inside out—from hearts, to homes, to churches and to communities. The Mercy Journey reports on the research and then turns those insights into practical and urgent lessons for you, your family, your church or your workplace.
Through this four-week series, you will explore issues like giving and receiving forgiveness, what mercy looks like and to whom it should extend, and how individuals and churches go about providing relief to those in need. We’ve provided sermon outlines, communicators’ slides, small group guides, youth and children’s curriculum—and even guides for families and business leaders. All with the hope that more Christians will infuse their hearts, homes, workplaces, churches and communities with mercy.
