Ken Campbell is the Senior Pastor of Capital City Baptist Church.  I asked Ken how the Lord is working good in his church in the midst of these challenging times.  Read his encouraging response, and pray with me that the Lord will continue to use Ken and Capital City Baptist Church in a great ways for His kingdom!

Generally speaking, I believe it would be safe to say that for nearly all of us, no life experience has prepared us for what we have experienced the last 6 months; unless possibly you lived through the Great Depression in the 20th century. I can say that no training I received in Bible college or Seminary has trained me for this type of ministry the last few months!

Clint Eastwood once said in a movie that Marines “improvise, adapt and overcome!” If you are a current or former Marine, please check me on that one! I think to a certain extent pastors have improvised their worship service format, adapted to safety guidelines, and overcome the obstacles that have been laid in front of us. This certainly does not make us Marines, but it certainly illustrates that we are in a battle—the battle for the soul (Eph.6:12). With so many trials, troubles and turmoil placed before us, we can only but “press on” as Paul admonishes his brothers and sisters at Philippi.  (Phil.3:14)

As with many or our SBC churches, CCBC is not any different, with a large percentage of mature adults. In preparation for COVID, God saw fit to bring several wonderful younger and middle-aged people to our church. In the time leading up to February, we had seen an increase in service attendance. This certainly has impacted us in a favorable manner as we have been able to respond to the needs of our people in different—and new—ways. We are excited about what God has done to enable us to continue to meet in small groups via technology. God “pushed” us into the digital realm that we had been so reluctant to enter; and now can offer our worship services over the internet to not just those who cannot attend due to COVID, but now also to so many of our shut-ins we had not been able to reach. We are also excited about what we do not know—how many that are hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ—maybe for the first time.

While we certainly miss our time of face to face fellowship, God has blessed us with the ability to meet in different fashions. We are now meeting in-person in an outdoor venue in the big parking lot we have with lots of “overgrown” trees that provide us shade. Must be the reason we just didn’t get to all that maintenance this last year! God provides! And we see it time after time.

Once last word…I have been guiding us through Psalm 10-13 on Sunday mornings—the Questions David asked in the midst of his praise. We find we are asking the same questions of “why, what, when and how long?” But David’s answer is consistent in his situation and ours. Remember, remember, remember. Remember WHO our God is! He writes:

“The LORD is King forever and ever; Nations have perished from His land. O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear To vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror.” (Psalms 10:16-18)
