Church Bullies...this is not a topic we want to talk about, but it is one that we all know has been a reality in the Church since the Church began. We could probably all tell a story or two or more about somone "trying to take over the church." We're not trying to air dirty laundry with this newsletter, but give some practical and biblical guidance for building strong, unified church families. 

Nine Traits Of Church Bullies by

Church bullies are common in many churches. They wreak havoc and create dissension. They typically must have an “enemy” in the church, because they aren’t happy unless they are fighting a battle. They tend to maneuver to get an official leadership position in the church, such as chairman of the elders or deacons or treasurer. But they may have bully power without any official position.

Church bullies have always been around. But they seem to be doing their work more furiously today than in recent history. Perhaps this look at nine traits of church bullies can help us recognize them before they do too much damage.

  1. They do not recognize themselves as bullies. 
  2. They have personal and self-serving agendas.
  3. They seek to form power alliances with weak members in the church.
  4. They tend to have intense and emotional personalities
  5. They are famous for saying “people are saying.” 
  6. They find their greatest opportunities in low expectation churches. 
  7. They are allowed to bully because church members will not stand up to them. 
  8. They create chaos and wreak havoc. 
  9. They often move to other churches after they have done their damage.

What can we do to prevent such bullying? Here are nine of my suggestions:

  1. Fight bullying with the power of prayer. 
  2. Seek to have an Acts 6 group in the church. 
  3. Have a high expectation church. 
  4. Encourage members to speak and stand up to church bullies. 
  5. Make certain the polity of the church does not become a useful instrument to church bullies. 
  6. Be willing to exercise church discipline. 
  7. Have a healthy process to put the best-qualified persons in positions of leadership in the church. 
  8. Have a healthy process to hire church staff. 
  9. Encourage a celebratory environment in the church.

Five Dangers of the Church Cartel
The pastor did not see it coming.

Sure, there were some hints and signs, but nothing to prepare him for the meeting on Saturday with the personnel committee.

He was told he needed to resign. There was no explanation given. He had only been given positive reviews to this point. Some of the people on the personnel committee had been his supporters and friends.

He was shocked.

The pastor was leading change in the church. The church was growing and vibrant. But a couple of weak staff members didn’t like the direction and expected accountability. They teamed with the known church bully and went before the personnel committee. They presented their perspectives.

The pastor never was asked his perspective. He could have fought the weak personnel committee and likely won. But he didn’t want to tear apart a church he loved.

He resigned.

For the sake of the church he loved, he resigned.

He was yet another victim of the church cartel.

A church cartel is an alliance of bullies, bully-followers, carnal Christians, and even non-Christians in the church. Its ultimate goal is to get its way. It feeds off of selfish power.

We don’t like to talk about church cartels. After all, it’s not the Christian thing to do. But they exist in too many churches. And if they are not exposed, they will continue to wreak havoc.

Here are five of the very dangerous realities of the church cartel:

  1. When a cartel is allowed power, the church is already unhealthy. 
  2. A church cartel leaves carnages of wounded and dying people. 
  3. Church cartels drive away healthy leaders. 
  4. Church cartels cause church leaders to work from a posture of fear. 
  5. We are told in Scripture to manifest the fruit of the Spirit; the church cartel causes the church to do just the opposite. 

Churches that have cartels usually know they are present. They know who the bully is. They know who the bully followers are. They see them. They hear them. And they often fear them.

Courageous leaders must confront and stop church cartels. If no one is willing, the church is already on a path toward decline and death.

Protecting Yourself From Piranhas By for LifeWay
I have had church bullies, piranhas, and pirates in all three of the churches I pastored. You have them in your church too, friend. As I write this post, I am thinking about some of them and wondering how I could have responded better to their biting criticism of me.

Here are four ways to protect yourself and your church from predators.
Start with realistic expectations about the outcome.
Guard your heart without closing it.
Stop talking when your critic stops listening.
Discipline them in order to restore them.

My friend Don Pucik wrote these wise words in a recent edition of Deacon Magazine.

If someone wants to find fault in a pastor, he will always be successful! When an individual’s complaints and criticisms turn into personal attacks and hostile accusations, you need to stand with your pastor, providing visible and verbal support. Church bullies cannot be ignored. If you refuse to engage and confront the inappropriate and sinful behavior of an antagonist, the conflict can quickly escalate with catastrophic damage to your pastor, his family, and the church.

Church discipline is not for the faint of heart or for those who seek a quick solution. It must be done in community (Matthew 18:16), but most of all it must be done in love. You will have enemies, even in your church. Jesus instructed us to love and pray for them (Matthew 5:44). Some of us will even have to pastor them.

Lead your church through conflict and reconciliation.
At Willow Creek, we expect disagreement—forceful disagreement. Unity isn't the word we use to describe our relationships. The popular concept of unity is a fantasy land where disagreements never surface and contrary opinions are never stated with force.

Instead of unity, we use the word community.

We say, "Let's not pretend we never disagree. We're dealing with the lives of 16,000 people. The stakes are high. Let's not have people hiding their concerns to protect a false notion of unity. Let's face the disagreement and deal with it in a godly way."

The mark of community—true, biblical unity—is not the absence of conflict. It's the presence of a reconciling spirit. I can have a rough-and-tumble leadership meeting with someone, but because we're committed to community, we can still leave, slapping each other on the back, saying, "I'm glad we're still brothers." We know no one's bailing out just because of a conflicting position.

Community is bigger than that. But developing community, true biblical unity, does not happen naturally; it must be intentional.

Because of my commitment to community, there are several issues for which I'll go to the wall.

First, we at Willow Creek will not tolerate biblical infidelity, a discounting of the clear teachings of Christ.

Second, we insist on the enforcement of Scripture, the living out of the teachings of Christ. We'll defend not only the inerrancy and authority of Scripture, but also the indisputable importance of applying biblical teaching to our daily lives in practical ways.

Someone told me of a woman who is terrorizing a local congregation with her slanderous tongue. She's doing so in a church that holds high the Word of God. But the church leaders don't enforce it. They'll permit a loose-tongued woman to poison the body of Christ. They get an A for inerrancy and an F for enforcement. We want an A in both.

Third, we expect lay and staff leaders at our church to be on board with the basic vision of Willow Creek. We had a leader who, after several years of service, concluded that he could no longer agree with our vision. When we were a small church, he believed in our mission. But when we passed the 4,000-attender mark, he thought we should start satellite churches and decentralize. The rest of us, however, didn't sense God's leading in that direction.

We had an oil-on-water mixture. He made a high-integrity move and voluntarily resigned from his leadership position.

The last non-negotiable is verbal discipline. Years ago, I took to heart what Scott Peck had to say about conflict resolution. Often what undermines the conflict resolution process, he says, is the lack of verbal discipline. When we attend a piano concert we expect the pianist to offer a disciplined performance, demonstrating that thought, skill, and practice were part of the preparation. A concert is not a "whatever I feel like" event.

In confrontation, however, too often our verbal discipline goes out the window. People make always and never statements. They exaggerate the truth or get careless with facts. Volume levels increase. And then we wonder why we're unsuccessful in finding resolution.

Through the years, I've reminded our church continually about disciplined verbal expression. If in a debate someone is losing verbal control, I'll call a time-out so people can settle down. Then we'll come back together for a discussion that is controlled, accurate, and constructive.

Annual (Senior) Adult Conference
Cande Ackler sent a report from the recent 11th Annual Adult Conference with a request for the 12th Annual Conference:
First Baptist Church of Orangevale has hosted this meeting for the past eleven years, and 2017 was one of the best we have had.
During the three days, we had a barbecue on Sunday afternoon followed by music led by John McDaniel and the worship team from Orangevale, and a presentation by Dr. Carl Morgan, Director and Curator of the Woodland Museum of Biblical Archaelogy.  Dr. Morgan also spoke on Monday and Tuesday mornings.  Early sessions on Monday and Tuesday included a presentation by the California Highway Patrol of their “Age Well Drive Smart” program for drivers age 65 and older.  The Senior Ombudsman from California Department of Motor Vehicles provided invaluable information for the senior driving community.  On Tuesday morning, representatives of First Call Hospice presented great information about the concepts involved in hospice care for patients of all ages approaching the end of life.
The conference was well attended  by representatives from seventeen churches, with 83 on Sunday evening, 64 on Monday, and more than 40 on Tuesday.  Of course great fellowship occurred during the lunches after each morning session.
Orangevale has enjoyed hosting the past eleven years of conferences, but is seeking another church to host the meetings in 2018.  Any church group interested in hosting may contact Richard Ackler, Senior Adult Ministries Coordinator at First Baptist Church of Orangevale, at (916)601-6017, or

Youth Leader Internship
Our church is seeking to fill a vacant position for Youth Leader Intern immediately, and we are reaching out to other churches and Christian organizations in the area with hopes of finding the right person (or couple) for the job.  We are a small-town conservative church, and our active Youth Group currently consists of 8 – 15 students at our Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday gatherings.  The position will require about 15 hours of work each week.  We will offer a salary of $750 - $1000, along with a generous budget for Youth activities.

Unique Mission Project Opportunity: Supporting Seminary Students and Persecuted Christians in Myanmar
What your church can do:
1. Show a five-minute video in your service about the ministry
2. Have 1-2 leaders/contact persons to lead this project in your church who can explain the importance of this project and what it is accomplishing and who can oversee the sell of the bracelets used to raise the money as well as forward the money to The Church on the Rock in Canada. (See below for more details). (If you are near the Sacramento area, we can provide a leader/speaker to coordinate with your church if you are willing to let us come and share).
3. Commit to sell at least 100 bracelets. (They are really beautiful and are hand-made by the families in Myanmar).

The Church on Cypress in Carmichael has partnered with The Church on the Rock in Canada for many years. We need churches who, as part of their mission activities, would be willing to join us in supporting the mission churches in Myanmar. This project provides financial support for a lay pastor seminary (training 70-90 men from 15 outlying villages) as well as aiding Christian families being persecuted there. 
The families are making Kumihimo (braided) Bracelets which will then be offered for sale through churches here in the US. 100% of all monies collected go to the mission in Myanmar. There are no administrative costs. All work here is done by volunteers. 
We currently have 1,000 bracelets ready for sale, we just need your help by including this as one of your mission projects.  Here are links to both the informational video available for your use and to pictures/information on the Myanmar Mission activities:

As part of the Ignition Conference at the end of December, the students will have the opportunity to help with several service projects in our area from 1:15 pm to 4:45 pm on December 29th.
