Network News - March 30, 2017

Throughout modern history, the Church has run on volunteer power. Most congregations rely heavily on a volunteer base to invest in people's lives, to build up the church, and to minister to the needs of others. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:11-13, (NLT): Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.

This week we'll look at some articles, and a couple funny videos, about church life, membership, volunteers, and service.

CT Pastors posted an article by Bill Hybels called "Growing Your Church's Volunteer Base: Principles for introducing more people to the joy of service"
Hybels writes: I refer to a church's volunteer base as the "Y Factor." That phrase is based on a simple equation: X + Y = Z, where Z represents the fruit of a church's ministry. X represents the paid staff, and Y represents the church's volunteer base. Most churches can't increase their paid staff, but they can almost always increase their volunteer base.
When a church or organization increases the "Y factor," everyone wins. Most importantly, of course, God wins. He is honored as the architect of the plan and the octane behind the whole enterprise. Here are some foudnational tasks for how church leaders can increase their volunteer base:
Take responsibility...
Share the joy...
Cast a positive vision...
Debrief, refocus, and reassign...
Hopefully, each new volunteer means that one more Christ-follower is discovering the thrill of serving, and one more psiritual need is being met.

Thom Rainer talks in an excellent CT Pastors interview about "Why Your Church Membership Stinks" "If you set the bar low for church membership, don't be surprised when people fail to commit." Read it here.  Another article by Rainer is "6 Reasons Your Church Members Act Like Jerks" from Outreach Magazine. This article deals with common hindrances to our churches being friendly and multiplying. Read more here.

Alexandria Kuo gives practical options for managing volunteers. "5 Digital Tools for Managing Church Volunteers" give "some handy electornic resources with the potential to revolutionize your volunteer management." Read it here.

Two podcasts on this topic are "Practical ways to Retain Volunteers with Jared Hogue" and "Why Good Volunteers Quit with Brian Dodd"

"Serving keeps us from turning inward as a church," says Executive Pastor Troy Palermo. "We want to build a church culture of service."..."From the beginning, we wanted to do local outreach through our small groups. We know we can do more through our Lifegroups than we ever could using only a centralized corporate outreach model." From an article about empowering small groups for ministry. Read more here.

"Is 'Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy the Service' Killing the Church?" by Karl Vaters states, "We'll never becoem biblically active communities of life-transformation until church leaders let go of our please-the-consumer mindset." Read the full article here
Another article along these same lines by the same author is "4 Reasons Our Church Stopped Doing 'Come and Watch' Events (And 5 Alternatives)." Read the full article here

Rick Warren writes "Church Health Check-Up: 7 Questions to Ask Every Ministry Leader" which could be beneficial whether talking to paid staff or volunteer leaders.
He writes: We have a lot of haphazard ministry being done in our churches around the world. Good people, who love the Lord, aren’t thinking through what God has called them to do. Ministry is too important to be done haphazardly. We can’t just say, “I’ll give it my best shot!” We need to think through what the ministries in our church are all about. Our ministries must be good stewards of all they’ve been given. For that to happen, we’ve got to plan ministry strategically.
There are seven important questions that need to be answered when you’re planning an effective ministry. These are questions for any healthy ministry – whether it’s your music ministry, greeters, small group leaders, or any other ministry team.

The last two resources are just for fun, and maybe some thought-provoking dialogue: Church Hunters, a spoof on "House Hunters" on HGTV takes a look at people's attitudes in finding a new church home. Watch here and here.
